By Hason Mutunzi Bwambale
Tension gripped St. Theresa Kisubi Girls Primary School today as a fierce fire engulfed one of the pupils’ dormitories, causing panic and disrupting normal school activities. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during a heavy downpour.
According to Sr. Maria Josephine Namubiru, the school’s headmistress, the devastating fire broke out in the dormitory allocated to the primary four pupils. As the thunderstorm raged outside, the pupils were attending their regular morning classes, unaware of the impending disaster. The exact cause of the fire was attributed to an intense lightning strike that struck the dormitory, swiftly igniting the structure and leading to the rapid spread of flames.
Upon noticing the smoke billowing from the dormitory, teachers and other staff members promptly initiated evacuation procedures, ensuring the safety of all the students at the scene. Firefighters from the local fire department were immediately summoned, and they worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Although no casualties or injuries were reported, the dormitory and its contents suffered extensive damage. Desks, beds, personal belongings, and valuable school supplies were all consumed by the fierce blaze, leaving the affected pupils without accommodation and essential belongings.
Expressing her concern, Sr. Maria Josephine Namubiru assured parents and guardians that the school administration is committed to providing immediate support to the affected students. Plans are already in motion to set up temporary lodging arrangements while the damaged dormitory undergoes repair and reconstruction.
The headmistress also emphasized that every measure will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the students during this challenging period. Affected families will be provided with the necessary assistance and counseling to help them cope with the emotional impact of the incident.
Furthermore, authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, assessing the structural integrity of the dormitory and evaluating fire safety measures on the school premises. It is aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future and implementing necessary preventive measures to safeguard the students’ welfare.
The entire school community is rallying together to support and uplift the affected pupils, encouraging them to stay strong and focused on their studies despite the unfortunate circumstances. Several relief efforts have also begun, with the support of local authorities and generous individuals, to provide the necessary resources and aid to those impacted by the fire.
As St. Theresa Kisubi Girls Primary School begins the process of rebuilding and recovery, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in educational institutions, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The incident also highlights the resilience and unity of the school community in times of crisis, as they work hand in hand to ensure the well-being and success of their students.
