Eight activists have been committed to the Luzira government jail on charges of attack, encouraging violence, and having an illegal gathering by Buganda Road Grade One Judge Muhumuza Asuman.

Eleven other protestors, including the group of activists operating under the name “Torture Survivors Movement UG,” were also detained on Wednesday in downtown Kampala during demonstrations against the delay in prosecuting ministers accused of receiving iron sheets intended for vulnerable communities in the Karamoja Sub-region.

They were accused of attacking ASP Musimenta Flavia, a female police officer, while she was going about her job.

The suspects, who were all represented by lawyers Samuel Wanda, appeared in court in extremely hesitant fashion. They all begged with the judge to award them parole. Their attorney testified in court that his clients required urgent medical care because they had been abused while in police detention.

The defense attorney expressed worry over the fact that some defendants are hobbling while others are experiencing abdominal discomfort.

Wanda even provided sureties to the judge and asked for parole on the basis that the accused is entitled to bond as a human right, at the judge’s discretion.

In a similar manner, a woman sobbed in court while claiming that her mentally sick mother was detained after attempting to take a photo with the demonstrators, but she too was detained.

However, Wanda’s request for parole was turned down by the judge, who instead remanded the suspects until their case is mentioned on April 12, 2023.

His Honor Asuman also gave instructions to the jail guards to give the suspects access to medicine while they were incarcerated.
