Suspected MAIMAI Militia Group Rebels Arrested the UPDF 23rd battalion in Kanungu District

On January 24, 2024, the UPDF apprehended two Congolese nationals armed with an AK47 SMG and ammunition in Uganda. According to UPDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, the duo was intercepted by the UPDF 23rd battalion in Kyeshero, Kanungu district. The individuals confessed to being fighters of the MAIMAI militia group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kulayigye stated that the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, along with the UPDF, remains committed to defending Uganda’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During the launch of the Tarehe Sita activities at Mbuya Defence Headquarters, Chief of Defence Forces General Wilson Mbadi stated that the UPDF has successfully restored and secured all borders, ensuring free movement and transactions for citizens. General Mbadi pledged to further engage with the community to maximize personal safety.

Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, MP for Kinkizi East, has played a crucial role in mobilizing locals to identify and report any suspicious individuals in Kanungu district, a border area with Congo. He believes that this collaborative effort is essential for defeating the enemy without compromising the safety of locals. The UPDF and other security agencies have consistently neutralized and arrested key suspects involved in planting bombs and carrying out isolated attacks in both DRC and Uganda.
