In a dazzling return to the spotlight, Ivory Coast marked their second-time hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a commanding 2-0 triumph over Guinea Bissau at Abidjan’s Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.
The Elephants’ last stint as AFCON hosts dates back to 1984, a memorable year when they clinched the tournament’s victory by defeating Togo 3-0 in the opening match. Ivory Coast boasts a rich history in AFCON, claiming championship titles in 1992 and 2015.
The host nation wasted no time in asserting their dominance as Seko Fofana broke the deadlock with a close-range finish in the fourth minute, brilliantly assisted by Franck Kessie. The early goal set the tone for Ivory Coast’s relentless pursuit of victory.
In the 58th minute, Jean-Phillippe Krasso further solidified the Elephants’ lead with a close-range shot, doubling the scoreline and securing a comfortable win for the home team.
The 34th Africa Cup of Nations is set to culminate on February 11 in Abidjan. Notably, the tournament had been initially postponed to 2024 by Africa’s football authority due to adverse weather conditions in the Ivory Coast.
