For several months, NTV Uganda has reportedly been blocked from covering events officiated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The television station has since resorted to alternative means to access information about the President’s engagements.
In a letter of concern, NTV Managing Director Suzan Nsibirwa expressed dismay over the unexplained exclusion stating that the station had received no official communication regarding the ban. The development took a more serious turn when NTV journalists accredited to Parliament were also denied access, raising questions of targeted restrictions by institutions mandated to uphold constitutional freedoms.

Responding to the growing speculation on social media, State House through Special Presidential Assistant for Press and Mobilization Faruk Kirunda confirmed via his official X (formerly Twitter) account that President Museveni personally directed that NTV and its parent company, Nation Media Group (NMG) be barred from covering him.
Kirunda said the President’s decision followed persistent instances of misreporting citing a specific incident when Museveni hosted Members of Parliament on a wealth creation tour at his Kisozi farm.
According to Kirunda, NMG management was duly informed of the President’s concerns and made aware of the problematic reports. He, however clarified that the directive does not prevent NMG from operating in Uganda or covering other government institutions.

Kirunda emphasized that the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) continues to issue official press releases accessible for media use. He also described President Museveni as the most media friendly leader who cannot infringe on constitutional provisions of a free press.
As the standoff continues, questions linger over media freedom and access to information in Uganda.
