Fishing Community Stands In Solidarity, Donates Two Bulls As ONC Readies For Ramadan Duwa Prayers At Kololo Ceremonial Ground
By Gad Masereka
In a gesture of solidarity and support, the Association of Fisheries and Lake Users of Uganda (AFLU) has generously donated two bulls to the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) – Kyambogo, as preparations escalate for the upcoming Duwa prayers during Ramadan. This donation comes in conjunction with ONC’s announcement of the official launch of Islamic Banking, specifically Salaam Bank, at the Kololo ceremonial ground on March 27, 2024.
Salaam Bank Uganda, a Djibouti-based bank subsidiary, received Uganda’s first Islamic banking license from the Bank of Uganda on September 8, 2023. This move follows legislative approval in June and presidential assent in August 2023 to authorize Islamic banking operations in the country, eliminating the need for a central Sharia advisory council, which was previously contested by the Bank of Uganda.
The forthcoming event at Kololo ceremonial ground will not only mark the launch of Islamic Banking but also include breaking of fast (Ramadan) and distribution of food items to the Muslim community.
During the bull donation ceremony, AFLU chairman Mr. Ssenyonga Kambugu Geoffrey expressed the fishing community’s solidarity with Chief Muzzukulu and her efforts, including poverty eradication and empowerment campaigns, and advocating for President Yoweri Museveni’s return to the ballot in 2026.
Mr. Ssenyonga also highlighted the challenges faced by fishermen, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations against harmful fishing practices like “hurry up” fishing that depletes fish stocks. He urged for more substantial support from government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM), citing that current funding levels are insufficient to sustain the fishing industry.
In response, Hajjat Namyalo, representing ONC, assured the fishing community of relaying their concerns to President Museveni and emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving issues affecting fishermen and lake users.
Chief Muzzukulu called upon Ugandans, particularly Muslims and allies of the Muslim fraternity, to participate in the upcoming event at Kololo ceremonial grounds, promising a time of communal sharing, reflection, and engagement with Chairman Museveni’s vision for a prosperous nation. The event aims to foster unity and support within Uganda’s diverse communities while celebrating important religious and cultural observances.
