NUP Chairperson Shot Dead During Ambush Targeting Cattle Rustlers

The Karamoja region of Uganda is reeling from the aftermath of a tragic incident in which Ambrose Lochoto, the National Unity Platform (NUP) chairperson for Kotido District, lost his life. Lochoto, also known as Machete, fell victim to a case of mistaken identity during an ambush targeting suspected cattle rustlers.

The fateful event unfolded at Kapalani Bar East, Kaabong Town Council, in Kaabong District, where Lochoto was fatally shot. Security agencies have been swift to respond, initiating investigations into the circumstances surrounding Lochoto’s death.

According to a statement released by joint security forces, the incident occurred during a raid prompted by reports of cattle theft in Kakamar Sub County. As security forces laid ambushes in strategic locations to intercept the suspected raiders, Lochoto unwittingly entered one of these ambush sites. Mistaken for one of the raiders due to his presence and attire, he was tragically shot dead in the early hours of March 10, 2024.

The deceased’s body was transported to Kaabong General Hospital for a post-mortem examination, as authorities work to unravel the events leading to his untimely demise.

In the wake of Lochoto’s death, the NUP has been vocal in demanding justice. Party president Robert Kyagulanyi condemned the actions of security forces, alleging an attempt to cover up the incident by falsely labeling Lochoto as a Turkana warrior. Kyagulanyi emphasized the need for accountability and justice for Lochoto, highlighting the challenges faced by NUP supporters and mobilizers across various regions.

David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP secretary general, expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of Lochoto, citing past threats against him due to his unwavering commitment to the party’s cause.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and risks associated with security operations in volatile regions like Karamoja. The call for transparency and accountability resonates strongly amidst the grief and outrage sparked by Lochoto’s tragic death.
