Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East County, Kanungu District, and Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, encouraged Muslims in Kanungu district to promote peace and strive for prosperity in 2024. During the opening of the End of Year conference for Muslim youth at Kanungu Mosque, the legislator acknowledged Islam as a noble religion, recognizing their commitment to prayers and lifestyle. He cited an example of his lead car driver who stops the convoy for prayers, highlighting the respect Muslims show for their religion, including uniform dressing.
At the conference, youth across 11 mosques in Kinkizi East revealed their involvement in poultry, goats, and other enterprises for livelihood but expressed the need for additional support. The youth are optimistic about further support following the Minister’s visit to Kanungu Mosque. Concerns were raised about potential exclusion from government programs designed for livelihood improvement due to the Islamic faith’s prohibition against borrowing or lending with interest.
Muslim Councilor Nuwamanya Eria stated they cannot participate in programs conflicting with their faith, urging the Minister to introduce programs accommodating Muslims while respecting their values.
Minister Chris Baryomunsi assured Muslims of the government’s commitment to supporting them in both life enhancement programs and religious needs.
He clarified that programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) do not contradict Islamic faith and promised more engagements with Muslims to ensure their inclusion in the government’s agenda to improve livelihoods. The Minister emphasized that the small interest on PDM funds is for administrative operations and should not hinder Muslims from benefiting from the program.
