Somalia Admitted into EAC Bloc as 8th Member; Salvar Kiir Calls for Single Currency to Boost Regional Trade
Museveni advices EAC to produce more goods and sell them to markets to facilitate prosperity for the people rather than getting accustomed to borrowing and getting aid.

Uganda’s Sabalwanyi General RTD Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, President of Uganda, witnessed the signing of the Accession Treaty for Somalia to join the East African Community.
Somalia becomes the 8th member of EAC, joining the Republic of Uganda, Republic of Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of Burundi, Republic of South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The current East African Community Heads of State Summit Chairman, Salvar Kiir, referred to Somalia’s admission as a boost to expand opportunities and integration, calling for the establishment of a single currency to facilitate trade in the region.
Kiir stated that the EAC bloc has made strides in Common Markets, Political Federation, Monetary Union, and Customs Union, and Somalia’s inclusion will contribute significantly, enhancing bilateral engagements to realize a united East Africa for the benefit of citizens.
President Yoweri Museveni, the host of the event where Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the Treaty of Accession to the East African Community, along with the Chairperson of the EAC Heads of State Summit Salvar Kiir Mayardit, re-emphasized the need to strengthen security at a strategic level, prosperity, and unity.
He advised the bloc to follow the vision of the region’s founding leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta – Kenya’s First President, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere – the First President of Tanzania, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Tom Mboya, among others.Museveni emphasized the importance of producing more goods for prosperous markets rather than relying on borrowing and aid, urging EAC leaders to organize and benefit from integration efforts. He pointed to Latin America as an example that remains impoverished despite its natural resources, and the United States, one of the world’s richest countries.
The President of Somalia referred to the admission of his country as strengthening friendship and promoting prosperity through building a legacy of unity and cooperation.
