Uganda to Host 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Third South Summit

Kampala, Uganda – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced today that Uganda will host the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Third South Summit. The media launch, held at Serena Hotel Kampala, marked the beginning of a series of events scheduled from January 15th to January 23rd, 2024.


Under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” the NAM summit aims to foster collaboration among nations for economic prosperity and sustainable development. The Third South Summit focuses on the mission of “Leaving No One Behind,” addressing challenges faced by marginalized communities and ensuring inclusive growth.


Vincent Bagiire, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed Uganda’s readiness to host the gatherings. He credited the media for effectively communicating the government’s security measures, addressing previous concerns.


Ms. Lucy Nakyobe, Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet, emphasized the government’s enthusiasm and preparations. She regarded the endorsement to host as a vote of confidence in President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership.


The Non-Aligned Movement, founded in 1961, gathers 120 member countries, representing about two-thirds of the UN’s member states, promoting cooperation and global solidarity. The South Summit focuses on challenges faced by developing countries.


The summits in Uganda offer an opportunity for nations to engage in dialogue, explore partnerships, and collectively tackle global issues. Events will feature leaders, diplomats, and experts, facilitating an exchange of ideas.


As Uganda welcomes delegates, the country aims to showcase its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. Successful hosting would enhance Uganda’s global standing, creating avenues for economic growth.
