Police Deployed To Overflown Kafu River Border Point, Forcing Travelers Onto Lengthy Detours
By Gad Masereka
To avert potential crises caused by the overflowing Kafu River, authorities have deployed police personnel at its border point, separating Hoima and Kyankwanzi Districts. This river overflow has resulted in the closure of a major road, compelling travelers to take longer routes through Buhimba Kakumiro Mubende to Kampala or Hoima Masindi Kiryandongo to Kampala.
For two consecutive days, police officers have been stationed to prevent vehicles from attempting to cross the rapidly flowing waters that have submerged a 2-kilometer stretch. This has left numerous individuals who were trying to reach Kyankwanzi stranded.
Katerega Primary School in Katerega village had to accommodate around twenty students who couldn’t cross the river to attend school. Furthermore, primary one and two students who had already crossed earlier were unable to attend school due to the flooding.
DPC Bogere Jackson, the head of Hoima police, has emphasized their collaboration with local leaders and the community to maintain peace and find solutions to address the situation. Engineer Samuel Muhoozi, the Director for Roads and Bridge Development at the Uganda National Roads Authority, has pointed out that the Kafu bridge is among those scheduled for reconstruction.
In the meantime, people are encouraged to use alternative routes while the government addresses the issue. As a consequence of these detours, transportation costs have risen by 5,000/-.
