A stranded mother named Apiyo Collin, 21, a peasant farmer from Baya village in Lukwo parish in Omoro district, killed her 3-day-old child by abandoning him in a latrine on September 27, 2013, at around 5 a.m., according to a case of infanticide reported to the territorial police in Aswa region and Omoro district.

Opiyo Geofrey, the victim’s brother, warned the woman during her pregnancy to stop producing on their farm. On September 25, 2023, at around 5 a.m., the victim began to experience labor pains, but out of fear, she went and gathered fresh grass from a nearby bush and covered her newborn baby. From the bush, she continued to check on the infant and feed her until September 27, 2023, when she discovered her still alive but coated in red ants. Around six in the morning, she took the child and dumped him in her uncle’s pit toilet. The mother was taken into custody when the baby’s body was found and taken to the hospital for treatment because she was bleeding. The brother is being sought out for arrest for making violent threats.

It’s a tragic tale. Everyone is profoundly affected and devastated by the loss of innocent youngsters in this manner. Every child should have the opportunity to live in an environment or home that is safe and healthy, according to the police. Unwanted children have always been saved and nurtured by our Child and Family Protection Unit, in collaboration with the Probation Officers and shelter houses. Their main objective is to protect children from harm and neglect.
