Nearly 10000 flee from Sudan to neighbouring Central African Republic

Around 9,700 individuals have left Sudan so far, according to UN officials who just returned from a border hamlet in the Central African Republic, and they anticipate more to follow.

A third of them were Central Africans going back to their homes.

While some have forced to set up temporary camps near the town of Am Dafok, others have been housed by local families.

Mohamed Ag Ayoya, the highest humanitarian representative for the UN in the nation, said, “We are currently discussing with the minister who will decide on behalf of the government where this population will be settled.

Since the rainy season began this month and the area is vulnerable to flooding, the situation in Am Dafok town is far from ideal.

Malaria outbreaks in particular are causing the World Health Organization (WHO) concern. Additionally, malnutrition is a problem since it makes people weak and more susceptible to illness.

“At least in relation to this, we have already begun to care for the sick. Gervais Tengomo, an emergency officer with the WHO, said: “We are trying to see whether we can offer mosquito nets so that people can at least protect themselves against malaria.

In order to promptly identify potential epidemics and put them under control, he continued, “We are also stepping up surveillance.”

The problems in the Central African Republic are numerous. More than half of the population, according to the UN, “needs assistance and protection.”

For many years, it has been embroiled in a civil war of its own, which has maintained it among the ten poorest nations in the world.

There are another 120,000 individuals, according to the UN, who require food aid.
