Baryomunsi Says Bobi Wine Not Under Threat
The government of Uganda has said there is no justification for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, to remain in hiding, insisting that he is not being pursued by state security agencies.
Information and National Guidance Minister Chris Baryomunsi said Bobi Wine is neither wanted by the police nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), dismissing claims that the opposition leader faces imminent arrest or harm.
“There’s no need for him to be in hiding. Nobody wants him. He’s not under pursuit by the police or the army,” Baryomunsi said, noting that he was speaking on behalf of the government of Uganda.
The minister said Kyagulanyi is free to return to his residence and continue his activities, provided he observes the law and maintains public order.
“He is free to come from wherever he is.
He should return to his home, remain calm, and observe law and order,” Baryomunsi added.
Baryomunsi also criticised what he described as exaggerated claims by the opposition, arguing that such statements create unnecessary tension and public anxiety.
“He should avoid unnecessary drama and theatrics that attempt to create a narrative where none exists,” the minister said.
The government has repeatedly denied accusations of targeting opposition figures, maintaining that all political actors are free to operate within the framework of the law.
Opposition leaders, however, have continued to raise concerns about harassment and intimidation by security agencies.
