Victoria University one win away from National Basketball League promotion

By Gad Masereka

The Victoria University Crocs are just one game away from making history as they edge closer to earning a spot in the National Basketball League (NBL). A dominant 77-52 victory over the UMU Flames in the second leg of the promotion playoff semi-finals on Sunday showcased their determination and strength.

Victoria University established early dominance, storming to a 43-15 halftime lead with a near-impenetrable defense that held UMU to just five field goals in the first half. The Crocs maintained their momentum in the second half, focusing on high-tempo offensive plays and solid defense to seal the win.

Cedric Alema delivered a stellar performance, scoring a game-high 27 points, while Joseph Kumba impressed with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, solidifying the Crocs’ control of the series.

Building on their narrow 56-51 victory in Game 1, the Crocs now lead the best-of-five series 2-0 and need just one more win to secure their promotion to Uganda’s premier basketball league.

Meanwhile, in the other semi-final matchup, the Rezlife Saints took a step closer to NBL promotion with a convincing 71-49 win over the UPDF Tomahawks. The Saints also hold a 2-0 lead in their series.

Sunday’s thrilling playoff games also saw competitive clashes in the women’s bracket, with Amazon Rhino narrowly defeating Nkumba Lady Marines 66-65, and Angels edging out Our Saviour 54-51.

With one game left to seal their fate, the Crocs are riding high on their momentum and solid teamwork. Speaking after the game, Crocs captain Cedric Alema said, “This victory is a testament to our hard work and focus. We’re ready to finish the job and make history for Victoria University.”
