Inspectorate of Government and Auditor General embark on investigating corruption at Parliament.

Recently, members of the public took to social media in a campaign to expose the unrealistic expenditures of the bigwigs in Parliament, who are paid exorbitantly from taxpayers’ coffers. The campaign, dubbed #ParliamentExhibition, has raised eyebrows among many, questioning whether leaders are concerned about the well-being of citizens. The campaign has yielded results, as the investigating bodies of the government, including the Inspectorate of Government and Auditor General, have shown interest in the allegations and are examining what has been shared and displayed on the internet. The bodies will provide a detailed report which may result in actions against implicated officers. According to Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, the NRM believes in zero tolerance for corruption, urging citizens to always provide information to hold the government in check. He commended the people behind #ParliamentExhibition and urged them to expose more government departments because the money being spent is taxpayers’ money, and exposing what happens in government is healthy as far as the NRM is concerned.

He elaborated that since the government is entrusted with the responsibility to spend money on behalf of citizens, it is acceptable to demand accountability, provided the intention is to promote transparency and accountability rather than blackmail and political unrest.

He urged those responsible for handling public resources on behalf of citizens to remain accountable to their roles. The issue, he said, has not been discussed in Cabinet, which is chaired by the President of the Republic of Uganda.
