Former Rukungiri MPs Kaginda, Muzanira Survive Terrifying Road Accident In Lweera
Former Members of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, Hon. Roland Mugume Kaginda, and Hon. Betty Muzanira, had a narrow escape from serious injury today when their vehicle overturned on Lwera Road, Masaka.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, left both politicians shaken but fortunately conscious and alert. According to reports, emergency services swiftly responded to the scene and transported Kaginda and Muzanira to a nearby medical facility for observation.
Renowned opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye confirmed the accident, expressing relief that both individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. “Rukungiri former MPs, Hon Roland Kagyinda and Hon Betty Muzanira survived a terrible accident in Lweera, between Lukaya and Katonga bridge today (Sunday) afternoon,” Dr. Besigye stated, adding, “Our prayers for quick recovery.”
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Ugandan authorities.
Hon. Kaginda, known for his prominent role in the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, served as the Rukungiri Municipality MP from 2016 to 2021. Meanwhile, Hon. Muzanira, affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, had previously contested the Rukungiri Woman MP seat in the 2021 elections.
This incident brings attention once again to the rising trend of road accidents in Uganda. Factors such as human error, adverse weather conditions, and the poor state of roads contribute significantly to these accidents. According to the 2022 Uganda Police Force (UPF) annual report, the country witnessed a concerning increase in road accidents, with 20,394 cases registered in 2022 compared to 17,443 the previous year. Shockingly, out of every 100 crashes, 22 resulted in fatalities, with reckless driving cited as the leading cause in 61 percent of accidents.
The survival of Hon. Kaginda and Hon. Muzanira serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for concerted efforts to address the underlying causes of accidents on Ugandan roads.
