New Architect Board Sworn In at Imperial Royal Hotel, Kampala, with State Minister Persis Namuganza as Chief Guest

Kampala, January 11, 2024 — In a ceremony held at the Imperial Royal Hotel in Kampala, the newly appointed members of the Architect Board were sworn in on Wednesday. The State Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development (Lands) in the Cabinet of Uganda, Persis Namuganza, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

During the event, Minister Namuganza delivered a speech emphasizing the crucial role architects play in the development of the country. She stressed the importance of quality infrastructure, including houses and roads, in determining a nation’s progress. The minister highlighted the collaboration between architects and engineers in ensuring the structural integrity of buildings.

Namuganza expressed concerns about the manipulation of the architectural profession, urging architects not to sit back while their field is exploited. She emphasized the need for architects to work together, advising against unethical practices that compromise the safety of constructions.

“We are going to empower them to make sure that the handful of people, the crooks who are destroying their profession, face consequences,” stated Minister Namuganza. She encouraged architects to cooperate with other bodies and the government to address challenges in the field and contribute to Uganda’s infrastructure development.

The outgoing Chairperson of the Architect Board, Mr. Robert Kigundu, delivered a message highlighting the responsibilities of the board, including regulating the practice of architecture in Uganda and ensuring the profession’s ethical standards. Kigundu acknowledged the challenges the board faces, such as cases of unqualified architects and unethical practices, but commended their efforts in handling disciplinary matters.

The incoming Chairperson, Miriam Latino, outlined the vision and objectives of the Architect Board. She emphasized the need for architects to collaborate with other stakeholders, including government bodies, to address challenges in the construction industry and contribute to societal transformation.

Minister Namuganza urged the incoming board to continue working towards visibility and collaboration. She emphasized the importance of architects aligning their visions with government agendas and addressing challenges within the profession.

Following the speeches, Miriam Latino, the new Chairperson, and other board members, including Vice Chairperson Jessie Tukacungurwa, Mark Bwambale, Venna Mbabazi Mwinganisa, Abdul Wahab Nyanzi, and Jacklin Namayanja, were sworn in.

The event concluded with the outgoing Chairperson handing over files and responsibilities to the incoming Chairperson, symbolizing a smooth transition of leadership. Minister Namuganza congratulated the new board members and expressed her commitment to supporting their efforts to enhance the architectural profession in Uganda. The ministry aims to work closely with the Architect Board to address challenges, enforce regulations, and contribute to the country’s development.
