Negligence At Tororo Main Hospital Leads To Nurse’s Arrest Following Tragic Infant Deaths

TORORO, UGANDA – In a shocking turn of events, a nurse at Tororo Main Hospital, identified as Justin Lugose, has been arrested on charges of negligence, following the tragic deaths of two newborn babies last week. The arrest was ordered by District Chairperson John Okea, who convened a critical meeting with hospital management to address the incident.

The gathering took place at the hospital boardroom and aimed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the infants in the neonatal unit. The alarming revelation that all seven assigned nurses were absent on the fateful day prompted questions about the hospital’s staffing and operational protocols.

During the meeting, District Chairperson John Okea, Principal Nursing Officer Stella Agambi, and Hospital Superintendent Thomas Ochar sought accountability from the hospital management. Okea emphasized, “We cannot tolerate negligence that results in the loss of life, especially in a healthcare setting.”

Among the health workers identified for questioning were Assistant Nursing Officer Justine Lugosi and Dr. Ken, the Gynecologist. Lugosi, who failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for her absence, was subsequently committed to the police for further interrogation.

The accused nurse was handed over to the authorities in the presence of District Chairperson John Okea and Tororo District Police Commander (DPC) Adam Kimuli. However, the meeting witnessed intense discussions and disagreements among medical staff, with accusations of unprofessional conduct and indiscipline.

Paediatrician Dr. Augustus Ogutu and Assistant Nursing Officer Akii Okweri found themselves in the crossfire during the heated discussions. District Councillor Molly Cheria voiced concerns about the recurring negligence cases at the facility, insisting on ongoing investigations to hold all responsible parties accountable.

With a population of over two million people relying on Tororo Main Hospital from Bukedi sub-region and across Kenya, the incident has raised significant questions about the state of service delivery in the facility. District Chairperson John Okea reiterated the commitment to uncover the truth, stating, “This is not the first time the facility is facing negligence cases; investigations are still ongoing to have all culprits arrested.”

In the midst of this tragedy, the Tororo Main Hospital is now under increased scrutiny, as the community seeks reassurances about the quality of healthcare services provided by the facility.
