Six People Die In Jinja-Iganga Highway Accident
On Saturday, November 4, a car incident involving three vehicles happened near Namasoga village in Iganga on the Jinja-Iganga route, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.Three vehicles were involved in the accident: a Toyota Sienta, registered UBJ 679Y, an Isuzu Elf truck, UBH 032W, and a commuter taxi, registered UAV 659L.
Leokadia Nangoma from Lwanda in Luuka district, Yahaya Kinyata, 27, a resident of Namutumba, and Umar Gonzaga Batwawula, a resident of Buyembe village in Ibulanku sub-county in Bugweri district, were identified by the police as the deceased.
As at the time of publication, two children and one additional adult female were unidentified.The event was confirmed by Diana Nandawula, the spokesperson for the Busoga East Police, who also stated that some victims passed away during the transit for treatment and others upon arriving at Iganga Hospital.
Nandawula explained that the Isuzu truck which was loaded with sand and heading to Jinja District, got a flat tyre and veered off the road. “The truck got a flat tyre, veered off its lane and collided with the taxi which was coming from the Jinja side, while the Sienta vehicle rammed into the truck from the rear,” she said.
By press time, the bodies were still at Iganga Hospital mortuary while the vehicles were towed to Iganga Police Station. Nandawula attributed the incident to driving a truck which was in poor mechanical conduction, and reckless driving.
