Stop Politicizing Everything: Minister Baryonunsi Scoffs At AFCON 2027 Critics

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the minister for ICT and national guidance, has scoffed at opponents who he claims have politicized Uganda and East Africa into winning the bid to host the African Nations Cup in 2027.

On Tuesday, when speaking to the media, Baryomunsi referred to the critics as self-seekers but was quick to mock them for their futile efforts.

“Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania have won the bid to host AFCON 2027, and if you’re a patriotic Ugandan, you should be happy about that. Each and every one of us should be proud of it. Some Ugandans have distinct wiring, so they feel as though they have another home or country, according to Baryomunsi.

Following the announcement of the joint candidacy with Kenya and Tanzania to host the AFCON in 2027, some Ugandans expressed skepticism over whether their nation would be prepared to host the most prestigious football event on the continent.

Many people expressed their opinion that Uganda shouldn’t have been put on the list of countries hosting the event, adding that there is no evidence of preparations.

Others stated that Uganda lacks the infrastructure needed to host the competition, while others claimed that it presents a potential for financial theft.

Minister Baryomunsi cautioned Ugandans against politicizing things in a speech on Tuesday.

There are people who would be pleased to see Uganda burn to the ground, but we pray that they will turn around. Saying Uganda should have lost the bid would make them pleased, right? We are therefore capable of managing the competition,” said Baryomunsi.

“Those who are speaking are idlers looking for jobs. Ugandans are so used to everything being politicized because of politics. This impression is incorrect. There are certain things we shouldn’t enforce. This is a cause for celebration and should bring Ugandans together.

The minister allayed concerns that Uganda would not be prepared to host the competition by 2027 by pointing out that a plan was in place to ensure the nation hosted the AFCON effectively.

They can complain and say whatever they want, but nothing will change. I want to reassure you that by 2027, we will be prepared. It just requires some organization and money.
