Brussels/Kampala — February 12, 2026The European Parliament has called for an independent investigation into alleged crimes against humanity in Uganda, citing serious irregularities surrounding the January 2026 elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) condemned “abuses, widespread intimidation, fraud, violence, and a nationwide internet blackout” that, they said, undermined the credibility of the electoral process.

The Parliament urged the Ugandan government to allow impartial international observers to examine the reported violations.

“The European Parliament expresses grave concern over human rights violations and the lack of transparency in Uganda’s recent elections,” the statement read, emphasizing that free and fair elections are fundamental to democratic governance.

Human rights groups have documented harassment of opposition figures, restrictions on media coverage, and internet shutdowns that disrupted communication nationwide.

These developments, the Parliament noted, threaten political freedoms and democratic norms.

The Ugandan government has not yet issued an official response to the European Parliament’s statement.

International observers and rights organizations are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
