Victoria Sugar Limited Strengthens Uganda’s Agro-Industrial and Renewable Energy Drive

Kampala, UgandaVictoria Sugar Limited is steadily consolidating its position as a key player in Uganda’s agro-industrial landscape, blending commercial sugar production with renewable energy generation to support the country’s industrialisation and power-supply goals.

Situated in Luwero District along the Kampala–Gulu highway, the company operates a large-scale sugar factory supported by expansive cane plantations covering approximately 17,000 acres.

In anticipation of future growth, Victoria Sugar has also secured additional land in Kiryandongo District, underscoring its long-term expansion strategy. The factory currently crushes about 3,000 tonnes of sugarcane per day, translating into an annual output estimated at 36,000 tonnes of sugar.

This production contributes to stabilising local supply while reducing reliance on sugar imports. Beyond sugar manufacturing, the company has invested heavily in renewable energy, positioning itself as an emerging contributor to Uganda’s clean power mix.

Using bagasse a by-product of sugarcane processing Victoria Sugar operates a co-generation plant capable of producing roughly 15 megawatts of electricity. While a portion of the power meets internal factory needs, the surplus is fed into the national electricity grid, supporting wider energy access.

Plans are also in place to introduce biogas-generated power, which is expected to further increase output.Victoria Sugar Limited operates under the Victoria Group of Companies, an industrial group with interests extending beyond agriculture.

The group has diversified into manufacturing, distilling, plastics, steel products, cables, tyres, tiles, and recycled consumer goods, reflecting a broader push toward value addition and import substitution.

Since commencing operations in Uganda in 2018, the group has invested an estimated US$150 million, creating thousands of jobs directly and indirectly through farming partnerships, transport, and auxiliary services.

The company also works with out-grower farmers, integrating small-scale producers into its supply chain and boosting rural incomes.Analysts say Victoria Sugar’s integrated model combining farming, processing, and power generation aligns with government priorities aimed at promoting industrial growth, renewable energy, and rural transformation.

As Uganda seeks to expand its manufacturing base while transitioning toward cleaner energy sources, companies like Victoria Sugar Limited are increasingly being viewed as examples of how agro-industry can drive both economic and environmental sustainability.
