Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has accepted an apology from journalist Wilber Muhwezi Kasibante, who had published false allegations linking Mbabazi to the murder of Dr. James Garuga Musinguzi. Mbabazi announced his acceptance of the apology on the Buyinza Network, a major WhatsApp group he personally runs with Buyinza Adam Luzindana as the only two administrators since 2014. In a press release dated August 17, 2025, Kasibante retracted his statements and offered a formal apology to Mbabazi and the family of the late Dr. Musinguzi.

The Controversy

The controversy began when Kasibante published an article alleging Mbabazi’s involvement in Dr. Musinguzi’s death. However, Kasibante has since acknowledged that the claims were baseless, unverified, and caused unnecessary distress and reputational damage. Dr. Musinguzi passed away on August 6, 2025, after a long battle with cancer, and had a history of political rivalry with Mbabazi, having challenged him in a landmark election petition in 2001.

Kasibante’s Apology

In his apology, Kasibante expressed deep regret over the harm caused by his article, particularly to the grieving family and the people of Kanungu. He formally withdrew all statements made in the article and pledged to uphold journalistic integrity in his future reporting. Kasibante’s apology was made in good faith, with a genuine desire to restore truth, dignity, and reconciliation.

Mbabazi’s Response

Mbabazi accepted Kasibante’s apology in good faith, emphasizing his commitment to truth, justice, and democratic values. He also paid tribute to the late Dr. Musinguzi, describing him as a man of principle whose name should be remembered with dignity. Mbabazi’s statement concluded with a call to move forward in the spirit of truth and reconciliation, mindful of the power of words to either build or destroy.

Importance of Responsible Journalism

This incident highlights the importance of responsible journalism and the potential consequences of spreading false information. Kasibante’s apology and Mbabazi’s acceptance demonstrate a commitment to upholding truth and dignity. The incident serves as a reminder of the duty journalists and opinion leaders bear to ensure the information they share is accurate, fair, and responsible.

Background on Dr. Musinguzi and Mbabazi

Dr. Musinguzi and Mbabazi have a history of political rivalry, dating back to 2001 when Dr. Musinguzi challenged Mbabazi’s election victory. The court ultimately nullified Mbabazi’s victory, a decision that was upheld by the Court of Appeal. This historical context adds depth to the recent controversy and underscores the importance of fact-based reporting in political discourse.
