A journalist, Arnold Anthony Mukose, has been remanded to prison on charges of allegedly sending false information claiming that the First Lady, Janet Museveni, had died.

Mukose appeared before court on Wednesday, where prosecutors accused him of using electronic communication to spread misleading reports about the First Lady’s death, an act authorities say caused public alarm.

According to the prosecution, the alleged message circulated on digital platforms, prompting concern among members of the public before it was dismissed as false.

The court heard that investigations into the matter are ongoing, with the state arguing that the offense falls under laws governing misuse of electronic communication.

Mukose denied the charges but was remanded to prison until his next court appearance as authorities continue gathering evidence.

The case has sparked debate among media practitioners and free speech advocates, with some raising concerns about the handling of misinformation cases and the implications for press freedom.

The matter will return to court on a date yet to be confirmed.
