Court Intern Remanded Over Alleged Leak of Bobi Wine Case Records

GULU, Uganda — March 13, 2026A law student intern attached to the High Court of Uganda has been remanded to prison after she was accused of unlawfully photographing and sharing court records related to a case involving opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

The suspect, Gloria Grace Laker, a Diploma in Law student at the Law Development Centre, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Miriam Amoro in Gulu on Friday.

Prosecution alleges that between March 6 and March 9, 2026, Laker accessed a criminal court register at the High Court and photographed entries relating to a case involving Kyagulanyi before allegedly sharing the information on social media platforms without authorization.

According to court documents, the information reportedly referenced a criminal case in which Kyagulanyi, the president of the National Unity Platform, is accused of making false statements concerning a person’s character.

Prosecutors contend that the act amounted to unauthorised access and dissemination of official court information, an offence that may contravene provisions of Uganda’s Computer Misuse laws and judicial confidentiality rules governing court records.

During the court session, Laker denied the charges when they were read to her.

Her defence lawyers sought to apply for bail, arguing that she is a student with a known place of residence and no history of absconding from court.

However, the court deferred the bail application after the state attorney assigned to the case was not present to respond to the request.

Magistrate Amoro subsequently ordered that the accused be remanded to prison until March 17, 2026, when the court will hear her bail application and provide further directions on the matter.

Legal observers say the case has sparked renewed debate about confidentiality and handling of judicial documents, particularly by interns and trainees placed within court institutions as part of their legal education.

Students from the Law Development Centre are routinely attached to courts across the country for practical training, where they assist judicial officers with administrative and legal tasks under supervision.

Authorities say investigations into the alleged leak are ongoing, and further details could emerge as the matter returns to court next week.
