Busia, Uganda — A 50-year-old man has died after being allegedly tortured by soldiers attached to the National Forest Authority (NFA) in Busitema Forest Reserve along the Tororo‑Busia road.

The deceased, Sulaiman Barasa, and his 15-year-old son were reportedly taken from their home in Sidibire Village, Namugondi Town Council, at dusk on March 3, 2026 by armed soldiers.

The pair were allegedly led deep into the forest, where they were stripped, beaten, and tortured. Barasa succumbed to his injuries, while his son survived the ordeal.

Residents say the incident has caused shock and anger in the community.

“It is painful that such brutality can happen in broad daylight. We fear for the safety of families living near the forest,” said John Okecho, a local community leader.

Barasa’s family backgroundBarasa was a father of five and a respected member of the community.

Neighbours describe him as hardworking and peaceful, often involved in community farming and local church activities.

His son, the only one present during the attack, is now reportedly receiving support from relatives while coping with trauma from the incident.

Local officials and civil society groups have condemned the alleged actions of the soldiers.

“We urge authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and hold anyone found responsible accountable,” said Grace Akello, a human rights activist in Busia District.

Police in Busia District have confirmed visiting the scene and recovering evidence to aid investigations. “There was a case of torture that led to the death of a 50-year-old man in Busitema Forest.

Our detectives are following leads and gathering statements from witnesses,” said the Busia District Police Commander.

The National Forest Authority has not yet released an official statement regarding the allegations. However, community members are calling for increased accountability and better oversight of soldiers deployed in forest reserves to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The incident has reignited concerns about human rights violations in areas near forest reserves, where security personnel are tasked with protecting wildlife and forest resources but have occasionally been accused of abusing residents.
