KAMPALA – The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has thrown its weight behind incumbent Speaker Anita Annet Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa for another term in office, with President Yoweri Museveni formally endorsing their candidacy.

The endorsement, reached after deliberations by the party’s Central Executive Committee, signals the NRM’s preference for continuity in the leadership of Parliament as the country prepares for the 12th Parliament.

Party insiders say the decision was informed by the leadership experience demonstrated by Among and Tayebwa over the past term, as well as the need for cohesion within the ruling party’s parliamentary caucus.Museveni’s approval of the CEC resolution effectively sets the stage for the pair’s nomination within the party structures.

With the NRM commanding the majority in Parliament, the endorsement places the two leaders in a strong position ahead of the official election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

The election of parliamentary leadership is expected to take place shortly after the swearing-in of Members of Parliament in mid-May 2026.Despite the ruling party’s position, the contest remains open to all eligible Members of Parliament, and any candidate may seek nomination in accordance with parliamentary rules.

Political analysts argue that the endorsement underscores the NRM’s strategy of consolidating internal unity while minimizing potential leadership contests within its ranks.

As preparations for the 12th Parliament gather momentum, attention now shifts to whether other aspirants will formally declare their interest in the top parliamentary positions.
