wengo District — February 28, 2026Two people lost their lives and six others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway on Friday evening.

The accident occurred at Kitasa Village when a motorcycle, registration number UDW 564V, collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger van, registration UA 079DC, that was heading toward Mbarara.

Police identified the deceased motorcyclist only as Moses, who died instantly at the scene due to severe injuries.

His passenger, 15-year-old Ian Lukyamuzi, was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Southern Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said preliminary findings suggest the motorcycle may have entered the highway abruptly, leading to the collision.

The force of the impact reportedly caused the van to overturn, injuring all its occupants.

The injured were named as retired Senior Commissioner of Police Godfrey Mwesigwa (63), the van driver Precious Kwesiga (58), and four minors aged between two and ten years.

They were initially treated at a health facility in Kyazanga before being transferred to Kampala for advanced medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Both vehicles were towed to Kyazanga Police Station as traffic investigators continue to establish the exact cause of the crash.

Police have renewed calls for motorists and motorcyclists to observe traffic regulations, warning that reckless manoeuvres and poor judgment remain leading contributors to highway fatalities.
