KAMPALA, UGANDA — The High Court of Uganda in Kampala has postponed the hearing of opposition politician Kizza Besigye and his co-accused to March 12, 2026, in a move aimed at ensuring procedural fairness ahead of trial.

During the latest court session, presiding judge Emmanuel Baguma directed state prosecutors to complete and serve full disclosure of all evidence they intend to rely upon no later than March 3, 2026.

The order includes witness statements, documentary exhibits, and any other materials relevant to the prosecution’s case.Besigye is jointly charged with Obeid Lutale, popularly known as Hajj Obeid Lutale, and Denis Oola, also referred to as Capt Denis Oola.

All three appeared before court as proceedings were adjourned.

Judge Stresses TransparencyJustice Baguma emphasized that timely disclosure is essential to uphold constitutional guarantees of a fair hearing.

Legal analysts say the directive reinforces established criminal procedure requirements, which mandate that accused persons be granted sufficient time and access to prepare their defence.

Defence counsel indicated that receiving the prosecution’s evidence ahead of time will allow them to properly examine the case file and respond accordingly when the hearing resumes.

Next Steps in the Proceedings

The court is expected to assess compliance with the disclosure order at the next sitting on March 12. Should the prosecution fail to meet the March 3 deadline, the defence may raise procedural objections.

The case continues to attract national attention due to Besigye’s long-standing role in Uganda’s political sphere.

Observers note that the coming weeks will be critical in determining the pace and direction of the trial.Further updates are expected as the High Court prepares to reconvene next month.
