Early Morning Violence in Gulu Leaves One Dead, Several Injured
GULU CITY – One person has died following violent confrontations between suspected street gang members and chapati vendors in Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City.
Police say the clash broke out at approximately 4:30am on Sunday along Cemetery Road after a dispute between the vendors and youths believed to belong to the “Aguu” gang.
Preliminary reports indicate that the disagreement started over payment for chapati before turning into a physical fight.
During the altercation, one of the suspected gang members was fatally stabbed.The incident quickly escalated as other gang members allegedly launched retaliatory attacks on vendors and nearby businesses.
Several kiosks were vandalised, and goods were reportedly looted amid the unrest.Security forces were deployed to the area to calm the situation, while firefighters extinguished small blazes set during the violence.
Two people who sustained injuries were taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police have confirmed the arrest of one suspect as investigations into the fatal stabbing and subsequent destruction continue. Authorities say more arrests are expected.
Community members have expressed concern over the growing influence of street gangs in Gulu, urging law enforcement agencies to intensify patrols and preventive operations.
Police have assured the public that normalcy has been restored and that security remains heightened in the affected areas.
