Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has demanded the resignation and prosecution of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, citing significant irregularities in the recently concluded 2026 general elections.

The call came during the release of the ULS’ 2026 election observation report, which detailed procedural lapses, administrative errors, and extensive militarisation that, according to the legal body, undermined the credibility of the electoral process.

Among the key issues highlighted were irregularities in voter verification, questionable handling of candidate nominations, and undue interference by security agencies, all of which the ULS says violated citizens’ constitutional rights.

The report also criticised the malfunctioning of Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVKs), equipment purchased at a cost of over Shs150 billion, yet reportedly failed in multiple polling stations.

“Justice Byabakama and his commission have not upheld the standards required for free and fair elections.

They must step down,” said Eddie Nangulu, ULS council representative for Eastern Uganda. Vice President Anthony Asiimwe added that national security concerns should never justify restrictions on fundamental freedoms.

The EC, however, insists it fulfilled its constitutional mandate, with spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi urging anyone with grievances to seek legal redress through the courts.

The ULS report has reignited a national conversation about the accountability of the Electoral Commission, with opposition leaders echoing calls for urgent reforms to safeguard the integrity of future elections.
