Former ASUL Vice Chancellor Prof Andrew Anthony Cula Found Dead in Lira City

Lira City, Uganda — The former Vice Chancellor of All Saints University Lango (ASUL), Prof Andrew Anthony Cula, has been found dead at his residence in Lira City, in a development that has shocked the academic community across northern Uganda.

According to university officials and close associates, Prof Cula’s body was discovered on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at his home in Teso Bar, West Division.

Preliminary reports indicate that the retired academic reportedly fell ill during the night and attempted to seek help, but assistance arrived too late.Sources at the university confirmed that Prof Cula had been living alone in Lira City, while his immediate family resided in Kampala.

His body has since been taken to Lira University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Prof Cula retired in November 2025 after serving as Vice Chancellor of ASUL, a private university established in 2008.

During his tenure, he oversaw institutional growth and consistently advocated for increased government financial support to private universities grappling with economic challenges in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A respected academic with a background in public health and microbiology, Prof Cula was widely known for his commitment to higher education and mentorship of students across the Lango sub-region and beyond.

Education stakeholders have described his passing as a significant loss to Uganda’s academic fraternity.
