Kampala, Uganda — A group of National Unity Platform (NUP) polling agents arrested during the January 15, 2026 elections have been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nakawa.

The agents were reportedly detained on election day after being removed from various polling stations where they had been deployed to carry out their duties as party representatives.

According to their legal team, the arrests occurred while the agents were lawfully monitoring the voting process.

During a court appearance held this morning, defence lawyers argued that the polling agents had been unjustly detained and posed no threat to the ongoing legal process.

The magistrate subsequently granted them bail, allowing their temporary release as investigations and legal proceedings continue.

Lawyers representing the group welcomed the court’s decision, saying they remain committed to pursuing justice and ensuring that the rights of polling agents and election participants are protected.

The case is expected to return to court at a later date as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
