Teacher Jailed Three Years for Impersonating Former MP in Fraud Scheme
Kampala, Uganda: The Chief Magistrate’s Court for Standards, Utilities and Wildlife in Makindye has sentenced a teacher, Ernest Edengel, to three years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to 12 counts of fraud and obtaining money by false pretence.
Court heard that between September 2024 and February 2025, Edengel and accomplices still at large used phone number 0786048140 to impersonate former Member of Parliament Francis Mukula.
The group allegedly targeted victims in Luweero and Pallisa districts, promising fake scholarships and government jobs in exchange for money.
Prosecution told court that several victims were duped, including Rose Bisika, who lost Shs1.5 million, Peter Osilon (Shs805,000), and Daniel Ayek (Shs455,000).
The scheme reportedly involved convincing victims that payments were required to secure opportunities that did not exist.Edengel had been on remand since May 6, 2025, before his sentencing.
The court’s decision brings partial closure to the case, although investigations remain ongoing as authorities continue to pursue other suspects believed to have participated in the fraudulent operation.
Police have urged members of the public to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited offers of scholarships or government jobs and to verify information through official channels before making any payments.
