Kampala, Uganda — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has formally rejected the presidential election results announced by Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama on January 17, 2026, describing them as baseless and lacking legal credibility.

In a statement issued by the party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, NUP argued that the declared results cannot be verified due to the alleged absence of official declaration forms key electoral documents used to authenticate vote tallies from polling stations.

Rubongoya stated that declaration forms are essential in ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process, and their absence raises serious concerns about the integrity of the final results.

He noted that without these forms, the announced figures cannot be independently confirmed. The opposition party said it will not recognize the outcome released by the Electoral Commission and accused the electoral body of failing to adhere to established electoral procedures.

NUP further called for accountability and urged relevant authorities to address what it termed as significant irregularities surrounding the vote tallying process.

The Electoral Commission, led by Justice Byabakama, announced the presidential results earlier in January, declaring the winner following the national vote.

However, opposition groups and some civil society actors have continued to question the transparency of the process.

As of now, the Electoral Commission has not publicly responded to NUP’s latest rejection of the results or the concerns regarding missing declaration forms.

Political analysts say the dispute could intensify legal and political tensions in the post-election period, with potential petitions or further actions expected from aggrieved parties.

The situation continues to draw attention from local observers and international stakeholders monitoring Uganda’s electoral processes.
