Ronald Balimwezo Declared Kampala Lord Mayor

Ronald Balimwezo of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been officially declared the Kampala Lord Mayor after polling more votes than all other candidates in the city mayoral race.

The Electoral Commission announced Balimwezo’s victory after concluding the tallying of results from polling stations across Kampala’s five divisions. Officials confirmed that he emerged with a clear lead over his closest challengers. Balimwezo contested against the incumbent Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who ran as an independent candidate, as well as several other candidates from both political parties and independent backgrounds.

Although the Electoral Commission did not immediately release detailed vote figures at the time of declaration, officials stated that Balimwezo secured a significantly higher number of votes than his rivals based on verified results submitted by presiding officers.

The outcome marks a major political shift in the leadership of Kampala, ending Lukwago’s long tenure at City Hall and consolidating NUP’s dominance in the capital, which has consistently voted for opposition-aligned leadership.

The Kampala Lord Mayor serves as the political head of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and chairs the authority’s council, working alongside the executive director appointed by central government.

Electoral authorities reported a calm security situation during the declaration and urged all candidates to pursue any grievances through lawful electoral dispute mechanisms.

The date for Balimwezo’s swearing-in will be communicated in due course.
