Inter-Religious Leaders Visit Kyagulanyi Home as Wife Says She Remains Under House Arrest

Members of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) on Monday afternoon visited the home of former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, amid continued uncertainty over his whereabouts and the security situation surrounding his family.

The delegation was received by Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, who told the religious leaders that she remains under house arrest. She said security operatives continue to restrict movement at the family residence, adding that no official explanation has been given for the continued confinement.

Kyagulanyi himself was not present during the visit. According to family members, the opposition leader is currently in hiding, citing fears for his safety following recent political developments and a reported crackdown on supporters of his National Unity Platform (NUP).

The visit by the Inter-Religious Council appeared aimed at showing solidarity with the family and assessing the situation firsthand. While the council had not issued a formal statement by press time, religious leaders in Uganda have in recent days called for calm, dialogue, and respect for human rights as political tensions remain high.

Security deployments around opposition figures have drawn criticism from rights groups and sections of the public, who argue that such measures amount to unlawful detention and intimidation.

The government, however, has previously defended heightened security around political actors as necessary to maintain public order. As pressure mounts both locally and internationally, the intervention by religious leaders is seen as part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions and encourage a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political standoff.
