NITA-U recently Launched Free Public Wi-Fi in Ugandan Towns, Bridging Digital Divide
The National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U) has launched free public Wi-Fi in several towns across the country, including Bwera Town in Kasese District, as part of its efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion.
The initiative, part of the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project (UDAP-GovNet), aims to provide affordable and reliable internet access to citizens, particularly in underserved areas. The free Wi-Fi service is available in over 284 locations, primarily in the central business district of Kampala and Entebbe, with plans to expand to more towns and municipalities.
According to Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, Executive Director of NITA-U, the launch of public Wi-Fi in Bwera demonstrates the authority’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive Uganda. “Every citizen deserves access to affordable and reliable internet; this is the foundation for innovation, efficiency, and service delivery across all sectors,” he said.
The free Wi-Fi service is expected to benefit students, health workers, local businesses, and government offices, among others. Residents can access the internet at no cost, enabling them to stay connected, access e-government services, and participate in the digital economy.
Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kiime Kabbyanga, Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, echoed the importance of community-level connectivity, saying, “This intervention is more than just internet access – it’s about empowering people. When we bring connectivity to the grassroots, we equip citizens with tools to learn, earn, and engage with government services more easily. That is true transformation.”
NITA-U plans to continue expanding its free Wi-Fi services to more areas, promoting digital literacy, and improving access to e-government services.
