The golden flamingo trophy gleamed under the Arua sun as Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia stepped forward to receive one of the nation’s most coveted tourism accolades.

The ceremony, held during the World Tourism Day National Celebrations in Arua City, brought together leaders, investors, and conservationists to honour individuals reshaping Uganda’s tourism and hospitality landscape. Among them, Sudhir’s name stood tall for his enduring influence on the industry’s transformation.

As the Chairman of both the Speke Group and Ruparelia Group, Sudhir has been instrumental in redefining the face of Ugandan hospitality through a network of luxury hotels and eco-friendly lodges that have elevated the country’s global profile.

The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, who presided over the national celebrations at Arua Golf Course, presented him with the golden flamingo trophy in recognition of his remarkable contribution to wildlife preservation, sustainable tourism, and community-driven development.

In her remarks, Nabbanja lauded the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities for steering the sector toward national prosperity, crediting private investors for their innovation and resilience.

She applauded the people of Arua and the entire West Nile region for their warmth and rich cultural heritage, describing them as “a reflection of the hospitality Uganda proudly offers the world.” Delegations from the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan also graced the event, underscoring the city’s growing importance as a regional tourism hub and gateway for cross-border travel.

Behind Sudhir’s recognition lies a legacy built over decades of strategic investment and conservation advocacy. His establishments have not only enhanced Uganda’s accommodation standards but also generated employment and nurtured local talent. A senior tourism official described his efforts as “a delicate balance between modern luxury and environmental integrity,” noting that Sudhir’s approach has helped align private enterprise with national conservation goals.

Sudhir’s work in protecting endangered species and supporting eco-tourism initiatives has become a blueprint for responsible business in Uganda. His company’s partnerships with local communities have brought sustainable livelihoods to rural areas, proving that tourism can thrive alongside conservation when guided by vision and commitment.

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Sudhir expressed gratitude to the government and tourism stakeholders for recognising his efforts, reaffirming his dedication to expanding Uganda’s appeal as a premier global destination. “This honour strengthens my resolve to keep investing in the beauty and potential of our country,” he said. “Tourism is not just about luxury or leisure; it is about pride, preservation, and progress.”

The World Tourism Day celebrations in Arua concluded with a renewed call for collaboration between government, investors, and communities to ensure that Uganda’s natural and cultural treasures continue to attract the world while benefiting its people. For many in attendance, Sudhir’s golden flamingo was more than a personal milestone; it symbolised what Uganda can achieve when enterprise meets purpose in safeguarding its future.
