The Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has promoted Brigadier Wilberforce Sserunkuma to the rank of Major General in recognition of his outstanding contribution to national and regional peace efforts.
The announcement was delivered via a radio message from the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and comes as part of the latest restructuring within the armed forces.
Major General Sserunkuma currently heads the UPDF 3rd Infantry Division headquartered in Moroto, a strategic command center overseeing security and stabilization across Karamoja Subregion and Eastern Uganda.
In his career spanning over four decades, Gen. Sserunkuma has:
- Served in the ranks of the National Resistance Army (NRA) during Uganda’s protracted liberation struggle
- Commanded the 405 Brigade in Kotido, ensuring security across northern Karamoja bordering South Sudan and Kenya
- Led frontline operations against the Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda, South Sudan, and DRC under Operation Iron Fist
- Held Deputy Division Commander roles in both the 2nd Division (Mbarara) and 3rd Division (Moroto)
- Participated in international peacekeeping missions in Somalia under AMISOM and enforcement deployments in South Sudan
His promotion to Major General honors a legacy of loyalty, discipline, and operational leadership across some of Uganda’s most complex security theatres.
The UPDF statement lauded his “unwavering commitment to duty, regional stability, and mentorship of junior officers.”
Congratulations have poured in from Karamoja leaders, colleagues in uniform, and civil authorities. The promotion is expected to further strengthen UPDF’s strategic posture in the region.
