Kiyonga, Kabbyanga, Wangalima: Who Has What It Takes to Unseat FDC?
Wangalima Milton is a passionate candidate with deep concern for Bukonzo West.
Bukonzo West Campaigns End Peacefully as Kabbyanga, Wangalima and Kiyonga Make Final Appeal…
The Bukonzo West Constituency campaigns officially concluded on 15th July 2025. The two contenders Godfrey Kabbyanga and Wangalima Milton wrapped up their final rallies in Rusese Isango Sub-county following the Joint NRM Campaigns Schedule.
Separately, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga concluded his final rally at Kyabolokya Playground in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.
Overall, the campaigns were conducted peacefully with all candidates under the joint campaign arrangement demonstrating unity throughout their engagements. Despite the excitement, cheering and enthusiasm from supporters, the events remained calm and orderly.
Candidate Profiles and Race Dynamics
Godfrey Kabbyanga is making his debut in the parliamentary race for Bukonzo West. He faces Wangalima Milton a two-time loser in the NRM primaries. Meanwhile, Dr. Kiyonga who has previously held the NRM flag twice for Bukonzo West, has also been twice defeated by FDC’s Atkins Katusabe in general elections.
This track record suggests that despite Kiyonga’s decorated CV having served as Minister of Finance, Health, Internal Affairs and Defence as well as MP for Bukonzo West until 2016 he may no longer hold the political strength needed to unseat Katusabe. His experience remains unmatched but his influence appears to have waned.
From my observation throughout the campaign trail Wangalima Milton is a passionate candidate with deep concern for Bukonzo West. However, he faced major financial constraints that limited his reach including poor poster visibility (only three posters spotted throughout the campaign) and lack of a public address system.
Wangalima told me he is a well-known MC and hopes to ride on his public popularity. While this gives him some leverage, it might not be enough to overcome the more resourceful candidates.
Kabbyanga’s First Shot: A Strong Debut
Godfrey Kabbyanga contesting for the first time as MP for Bukonzo West, brings a strong political and development track record. He previously served as Mayor of Kasese Municipality for over a decade during which he was actively involved in local development.
As Minister of State for National Guidance, Kabbyanga has contributed to national and local government projects. Some include:
Strategic interventions during the ADF insurgency in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha in collaboration with Kasese RDC Lt. Joe Walusimbi and Bwera DPC Tai Ramathan.
Lobbying for ICT development including computers for schools and tablets for students, teachers, PWDs, and local leaders.
Launching Free Public WiFi 6 in Bwera Division.
Actively supporting the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu including receiving Omusinga Wesley Mumbere upon his return following amnesty from government.
Kabbyanga’s role in promoting unity and peace in Kasese has enhanced his visibility and credibility as a development oriented leader. In conclusion the People of Bukonzo will decide who will be flag bearer. #IvanKaahwaReports
