Kotido, 16 July 2025 — Political temperatures in Kotido spiked on Wednesday after reports began circulating on social media alleging that Hon. Ismael Muhammed Lomwar, Member of Parliament for Kotido Municipality, had been involved in a road accident. The lawmaker swiftly dismissed the claims as “smear propaganda” orchestrated to distract voters and discredit his presence ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party elections.
In a statement released early morning and echoed during a brief media engagement in Kotido town, Lomwar described the rumors as “pure fiction, intended to weaken voter morale and sow confusion.”
“There was no accident. I am safe, focused, and ready to serve,” he told supporters. “What you’re seeing is the desperation of political actors who fear transparency, unity, and the strength of the local movement.”
With the NRM primaries in Kotido Municipality rescheduled for Thursday, Lomwar rallied all eligible voters to show up in large numbers, emphasizing the stakes in the contest and urging unity despite recent tensions. The Electoral Commission had postponed the original vote due to irregularities reported in several polling centers.
Officials have since enhanced security and logistics to ensure orderly conduct, with local leaders vowing to uphold credibility throughout the exercise. Lomwar’s camp says it remains confident, citing strong grassroots support and increased vigilance.
The political scene in Kotido has grown increasingly competitive, following a series of surprise defeats and intense disputes over candidate selection. Observers note a rising demand among voters for transparency and accountability within party structures.
As voters prepare to cast their ballots, Lomwar’s reaffirmation of safety and readiness serves as a counterweight to what he describes as “distractions manufactured by cowards.” Supporters say they’re more determined than ever to stand firm and vote.
