Uganda’s Auditor General Edward Akol Scoops the Uganda Development Champions Award and to be Inducted in the Uganda Development Champions Journal by Public Opinions

The prestigious Uganda Development Champions Award has been bestowed upon Uganda’s Auditor General, CPA Edward Akol, in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards the attainment of Uganda Vision 2040 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This esteemed award is a testament to CPA Akol’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, promoting transparency and accountability, and promoting international best practices and standards in auditing and accounting sectors.

Other notable individuals to be inducted into the Uganda Development Champions Journal include Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Gen Gowa Kasita, Speaker Anita Among, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, First Lady Janet Museveni, Dr. Charles Mbiire, and Gen Salim Saleh,nominated Ministers, Nominated CAOs,nominated CEOs,nominated Government Officials,among others. President Museveni was the first to receive the Uganda Development Champion Award in 2022 at a ceremony he presided over.

As the head of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG), CPA Akol has made significant strides in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in the management of public resources. Under his leadership, the OAG has conducted numerous audits, implemented new initiatives like the Citizen Feedback Platform and Audit Recommendation Tracking Platform, and supported government institutions in improving service delivery. CPA Akol’s focus on promoting coordination, impartiality, and competitive staffing within the institution has yielded impressive results.

The OAG has successfully completed a large number of audits, including financial, compliance, IT, engineering, forensic, and special investigations. In 2023 alone, they completed 3,153 audits, including 2,731 financial and compliance audits. The OAG has also been implementing its strategic plan, demonstrating its commitment to long-term goals and improvements. The institution has made efforts to engage with stakeholders, including the launch of the Citizen Feedback Platform and Audit Recommendation Tracking Platform, which enables citizens to provide feedback on government programs and services.

CPA Akol’s leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping the OAG into a robust and effective institution. His commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance has promoted a culture of integrity and professionalism within the office. The OAG has conducted specialized audits focused on infrastructure projects and other areas, identifying weaknesses and recommending solutions to improve service delivery.

CPA Akol’s background and qualifications are impressive. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Heriot-Watt University-Edinburg Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (K) (CPA(K)) and has worked within the OAG for over 30 years, progressing from an auditor to his current position as Auditor General.

As Auditor General, CPA Akol’s functions are multifaceted. He audits and reports on the accounts of all public offices, conducts various types of audits, and makes recommendations to Parliament on non-compliance, deficiencies, and value for money. His commitment to capacity building and staff development is evident in the training programs implemented by the OAG, including induction training for promoted staff.

CPA Akol’s loyalty to the fountain of honor, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is evident in his dedication to the development of Uganda. His appointment as Auditor General by President Museveni in 2024 and approval by Parliament is a testament to his expertise and commitment to public service.
