Here are the Electricity Regulatory Authority Bosses Behind Mass Public Awareness on Achievements of President Museveni in the Electricity Sector

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has been lauded for its relentless efforts in conducting mass public awareness campaigns on the achievements of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the electricity sector. Under the leadership of the formidable board and management, ERA has successfully disseminated information to the public on the progress made in the sector, thanks to the President’s visionary leadership. At some of the Presidential PDM Tours, posters of ERA on achievements of President Museveni were distributed to local business men,Boda Boda cyclists and NRM Local Leaders.

ERA’s public awareness initiatives include the distribution of posters outlining the achievements of the NRM government in the electricity sector. These posters have been channeled through NRM structures in districts and sub-counties, providing local leaders with accurate information to disseminate to the general public. The authority has also been active on around 2,000 WhatsApp groups, maintaining links with the youth, NRM leaders, and the business community.

According to ERA CEO Eng.Ziria Tibalwa Waako, electricity is the engine for the social-economic transformation agenda of President Museveni. “As ERA, we have a duty to inform the general public on tariffs and policies as well as achievements,” she said. Eng.Waako has been instrumental in leading the campaign for regular public awareness and information dissemination, supporting the publication and dissemination of posters on achievements in the electricity sub-sector.

Despite operating on a limited budget for media and public relations, ERA has managed to reach out to people countrywide with updated information, facts, and figures. Of recent it has released a poster on whatsapp groups outlining 21 achievements of President Museveni in the Electricity Sector as explained by 21 national leaders.

The authority’s efforts have played a crucial role in updating the public and NRM local leadership on progress in realizing the NRM manifesto.

ERA’s contributions to the review of the NRM manifesto in the electricity sector have been significant. The authority has continued to publish key achievements, highlighting the progress made in the sector under President Museveni’s leadership.

The humble people at ERA deserve recognition for their dedication to public awareness and information dissemination regarding President Museveni’s achievements in the electricity sub-sector. Their efforts have helped to counter propaganda from wrong elements and subversive groups, ensuring that the general public has access to accurate information. With alot of propaganda against Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni regarding electricity on whatsapp groups, propagandists have always been defeated with facts and figures posted on whatsapp groups from ERA.

As Uganda continues to strive for socio-economic transformation, the role of ERA in informing and educating the public on electricity sector achievements cannot be overstated. The authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability has earned it a reputation as a trusted source of information on the electricity sector.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) mandate is to regulate the generation, transmission, distribution, sale, export, and import of electrical energy. This includes ensuring electricity is adequate, reliable, and safe, as well as overseeing the licensing of electricity companies.The ERA also establishes tariffs, approves rates, and supervises all power companies. ERA supervises all power companies, ensuring they comply with license conditions and operate within the established regulatory framework.

In conclusion, ERA’s public awareness campaigns on President Museveni’s electricity sector achievements are a testament to the authority’s dedication to promoting transparency and accountability in the sector. Eng Ziria Wako is the Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Regulatory Authority and the one behind the holistic transformation witnessed at the institution. Despite being a professional engineer, she is also a patriot and a loyal cadre of President Museveni. She believes in the culture of consultation and respects protocol.Ziria possesses 23 years of work experience in Uganda’s electricity sector, eight of which were in senior management positions. Prior to her current appointment, Ziria was the director of the technical regulation department at ERA. She was appointed CEO of ERA in 2017 and she has succeeded in building ERA to be the most visible ,vibrant and best performing government institution in Uganda next to Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).
Ziria prides herself in the development of various national and development partner-funded projects both at national and regional level, from sourcing of financing, appraisal feasibility studies and construction. She is a registered engineer with the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers and the National Engineers Registration Board, as well as a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) of New York.Ziria holds an MSc and BSc in electrical engineering from Makerere University, and a MBA in leadership from Walden University, USA. She won the Public Opinions Award titled the Uganda Development Champions Award and she has recently won the women in electricity Award from London.

Dr. Sarah Wasagali Kanaabi is the Chairperson of the ERA Board. She is a qualified Economist with varied experience in administration, teaching, research, and policy formulation. She has trained in various fields including economic Planning and policy, financial modeling for Public-private projects, Governance and enterprise risk management. She has 22 years of University teaching experience gained at the Islamic University in Uganda and Kyambogo University.She has served on the Board of Directors of Private Sector Development Center Mbale and the Eastern Private Sector Development Center Ltd. She also served on the Board of Governors of various secondary schools. Dr. Kanaabi has made several academic and professional presentations in the areas of economics, governance, gender, HIV/AIDS, career guidance, project Planning, poverty and development.

Ambassador Joan Rwabyomere an ERA Board member. She is a qualified lawyer with LL.B (Hons) from Makerere University, Master’s Degree in International Trade and Investment and a Masters of Business Administration in Oil and Gas Management. She has a wealth of experience in politics, management, diplomacy, business and leadership both in the private and public sectors, at national, regional and international levels. She has been Uganda’s High Commissioner to London (2006 – 2013), and to Nigeria (2000 – 2005).She has successfully served on the boards of various organizations, including Uganda Electricity Board, Civil Aviation Authority, National Enterprise Corporation, and Women in Diplomatic Service. Ambassador Joan served as a Member of Parliament and as a Junior Minister. She is a mother of Four (4) children.

Eng. Erias Kiyemba is a board member of ERA. He is an Electrical Engineer. He holds an MSc (Power Systems) from the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), and an MSc (Electrical Engineering) from Moscow Electric Power Engineering Institute (MEI). He has 32 years of work experience in Uganda’s Electricity Supply Industry. He was the Managing Director/CEO of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL), General Manager- Transmission Division, Manager Transmission (Operations & Maintenance), Principal Control Engineer, Principal Control Engineer, Ag. Principal Control Engineer, and Senior Protection Engineer, in Uganda Electricity Board (UEB).He is the Chairman Board of Directors of Elite Energy Consult Ltd. He is a Corporate Member of Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers, UIPE, (PE/467) and the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE, (No. 40073989).

Professor John Ddumba-Ssentamu is board member of ERA. He is a Professor of Economics. He holds a BA, MA, and Ph.D. in Economics and an Honorary Fellowship of Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (FUIB, Hons).He has vast experience in Leadership of Boards and Organizations and is the immediate former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Centenary Bank. He also served as a Chairman, Academic Board for African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) based in Nairobi, Kenya; Chairman of Microfinance African Institutions Network (MAIN) based in Lomé, Togo; Chairman of Coffee Marketing Board and Member of Finance Commission of Caritas Internationalis based in the Vatican.
He is the former Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University; a Care-Taker Vice Chancellor for Ndejje University; Chairman of Council, University of Kisubi (UNIK); Vice Chairman Council, Muteesa I Royal University (MRU); Member, Governing Council representing Universities of Eastern Africa of the Association of African Universities based in Accra, Ghana, and Member Advisory Board, Centre for Environmental Economics and Policies in Africa (CEEPA) based in Pretoria.

He was a Principal of the College of Business and Management Sciences (COBAMS) and Dean of Faculty of Economics and Management (FEMA) of Makerere University. He is a Fellow of Uganda National Academy and reputed for several publications in the field of Economics.Prof Ddumba-Ssentamu is a seasoned administrator with great integrity. He is highly adaptable with great attention to detail and a responsible person with adequate knowledge of corporate governance.
