Fort Portal City authorities have taken a 20-year-old woman into custody following accusations of stealing a newborn baby from the Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital. The suspect, a resident of Rwengoma ‘A’1 in the central Division of Fort Portal City, is currently being held by the Fort Portal City Police.

The incident transpired on the night of January 10, 2024, around 9 pm, within the maternity ward of Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital. Ms. Akugizibwe Consolate, the mother of the abducted child, was accompanied by her caretaker, Ms. Agnes Katumwine, during her admission for childbirth. It was during this time that an unknown woman, masquerading as a concerned citizen, allegedly seized the opportunity and took the newborn while the caretaker briefly stepped away to search for food.

Mr. Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is now facing charges related to the alleged theft of the newborn.

Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the motive behind the incident and provide a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance from the hospital. The Fort Portal City Police are working diligently to ensure justice is served and to determine the well-being of the newborn.

The shocking nature of the case has prompted heightened security measures within the hospital, and authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperative during the ongoing investigation.
