Kampala, January 15, 2024 – In a heartfelt plea at the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Palestine’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Riyad al-Malik, implored member nations to intervene and bring an end to Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza. Speaking passionately, al-Malik expressed confidence that the movement, known for its longstanding support for Palestine, would rally behind their cause.

Following the opening remarks by Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. (rtd) Jeje Odongo, al-Malik emphasized the urgent need for unity among NAM member states in addressing the crisis. He underscored the necessity of a ceasefire to attend to the dire needs of the people in Gaza and combat the reported crimes against humanity, including mass displacement.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza escalated on October 7, 2023, when Israel launched an offensive in response to a cross-border assault by Hamas. The violence has resulted in a devastating toll, with over 23,200 people, mostly women and children, reported dead in Gaza since then.

Expressing gratitude to South Africa for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on charges of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, al-Malik acknowledged the monumental challenge ahead. He affirmed support for South Africa’s historic position and awaited the ICJ’s ruling, expected before the end of the month.

In addition to seeking immediate relief for the conflict, al-Malik appealed for NAM’s support in securing full UN membership for the State of Palestine. He stated, “After putting an end to this (Israeli) aggression, we need the support of our movement to acquire our national and inherent right to become a member of the United Nations.”

Expressing gratitude to Uganda for its support of the Palestinian cause, al-Malik addressed delegates from 120 NAM member states, stressing the importance of standing in solidarity to overcome the challenges faced by the Palestinian people. The NAM, founded in 1961, has historically championed the independence of developing countries and advanced their interests on the global stage.
