Kyagulanyi: “If He Had Been Granted Bail for Treatment, He Would Be Alive”

Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine and the President of the National Unity Platform has alleged that Muhammad Segirinya’s death could have been avoided had the judicial system granted him bail to seek medical treatment. Speaking during Segirinya’s funeral at his ancestral home in Masaka, Kyagulanyi expressed deep sorrow and frustration, asserting that Segirinya was a victim of systemic neglect and targeted oppression.

He further claimed that there were plans by unnamed individuals to steal Segirinya’s body from his ancestral home. Kyagulanyi called for any condolences, including flowers or gifts, to be directed to Segirinya’s family as tangible support.

A Tribute to Segirinya Muhammad: A National Hero

In his eulogy, Kyagulanyi described Segirinya as a man of extraordinary resilience who rose from poverty to become one of the most renowned figures in Uganda. Despite lacking formal qualifications in economics or advanced education, Segirinya demonstrated unmatched intelligence and a deep commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Ugandans.

Kyagulanyi referred to Segirinya as a “national hero,” highlighting his relentless efforts to support the welfare of Ugandans, particularly in education and healthcare, during his brief tenure as the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North.

“Segirinya accomplished more in five months than many MPs have in years,” Kyagulanyi remarked, emphasizing that his achievements were made despite constant persecution by the government.

A Symbol of Trust and Friendship

Kyagulanyi shared an emotional moment, recalling Segirinya’s final wish: that he would speak for five hours at his funeral. This request, he noted, symbolized the deep trust and bond between them. Kyagulanyi pledged to honor Segirinya’s memory by continuing to speak about his life and legacy.

He also revealed that their connection began in the ghetto, united by shared dreams of prosperity and a vision for a better Uganda. Kyagulanyi humorously recounted Segirinya’s confidence in his abilities, joking about his proficiency in English, which Segirinya claimed surpassed that of former president Idi Amin.

Political Persecution and Untimely Death

Segirinya’s arrest in September 2021 on allegations of involvement in the Masaka “bijambiya” killings, which claimed over 30 lives, marked the beginning of his ordeal. Kyagulanyi criticized the judiciary for denying him bail despite his deteriorating health, naming Justice Lawrence Tweyanze as a key figure in this decision.

Kyagulanyi alleged that Segirinya was tortured during his detention, with graphic images of his injuries, including damage to his private parts, circulating online. He accused the regime of using Segirinya as a scapegoat while the real culprits behind the killings remained untouched.

A Legacy of Service Amid Adversity

Kyagulanyi highlighted Segirinya’s unwavering dedication to his constituents, even under dire circumstances. From the moment he was sworn in as MP—despite being unwell—Segirinya prioritized serving his people.

“Segirinya did not embezzle a single coin,” Kyagulanyi asserted, contrasting his integrity with the systemic corruption in Uganda’s governance. He lamented that Segirinya never fully enjoyed his tenure as an MP, as he spent much of his time in prison or hospital.

A Broader Context of Repression

Kyagulanyi linked Segirinya’s death to a pattern of political repression under President Museveni’s regime. He listed other prominent figures who had been killed or targeted, including Maj. Muhammad Kigundu, Muhammad Kirumira, Yasin Kawuma, and Felix Kaweesi former Police Spokesperson.

He criticized the Chief of Defence Forces and Son to President Yoweri Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his alleged role in perpetuating the oppressive system, calling him “privileged but disrespectful.”

A Call for Resilience

Addressing Segirinya’s family, Kyagulanyi urged them to remain strong, assuring them of his continued support. He noted that despite Buganda’s historical support for Museveni, the region has suffered greatly under his rule.

Kyagulanyi concluded by pledging to honor Segirinya’s legacy and to continue advocating for justice and accountability in Uganda.
