Apostolic Administrator of Kampala Archdiocese

His Holiness is a saint. Bishop Dr. Paul Ssemogere has been named the new Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese by Pope Francis.

Since Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga’s death in April, Bishop Ssemogerere has been functioning as the Archdiocese’s administrator.

Paul Ssemogerere (born June 30, 1956) is a Roman Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of the Kasana-Luweero Diocese in Uganda. On June 4, 2008, he was named Bishop of Kasana-Luweero.

Before moving to Kisubi Boys Primary School, he attended Kigero Primary School. He went on to St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School Katende, where he finished his O-Levels.

Ssemogerere and seven other young men were the first pupils at St Mbaaga Seminary in Ggaba in 1976. This was the first class of this seminary, which specializes in admitting men who are older than typical and had not attended a minor seminary to train as priests.

Ssemogerere was sent to the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1978 by the late Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1982.

Archbishop Rembert George Weakland, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee, ordained him a deacon on November 21, 1981.

Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga, Archbishop of Kampala, ordained him a priest on June 3, 1983 in Kampala. Until 4 June 2008, he was a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala.

On June 4, 2008, he was named bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero.

Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Archbishop of Kampala, consecrated him as a bishop on August 23, 2008, at Kasana-Luweero, with Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Ugo and Cardinal Emeritus of Kampala, and Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam, Titular Archbishop of Amantia and Papal Nuncio to Uganda at the time.

After the tragic death of Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kampala archdiocese by Pope Francis on Thursday, April 8, 2021.
