In a pivotal meeting held this afternoon in Kampala , the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) addressed the matter of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s potential 2026 presidential candidature.

The committee, chaired by Vice-Chairman Hajji Kigongo , opted to defer the decision on Gen. Muhoozi’s candidature to the party chairman. This significant development is slated for thorough discussion in the forthcoming CEC meeting.

President Museveni, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics, is renowned for his leadership since 1986. Having played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political landscape, Museveni continues to be a key figure in the NRM and Uganda’s governance.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Museveni, has progressively risen within the military ranks. His potential candidature for the 2026 presidential election has sparked national interest, reflecting the evolving dynamics within the NRM. Muhoozi, a few weeks ago, launched a new Pressure group code-named the Patriotic League of Uganda. This League has attracted the current crop of politicians in the current government, sparking uncertainty on who between the father and son would run for the top seat in the country.

CEC members, during their deliberations, acknowledged that the issue of Gen. Muhoozi’s potential candidature introduces a unique dynamic given his familial relationship with President Museveni. The decision to defer the matter underlines its significance, setting the stage for future discussions that will shape the trajectory of Uganda’s political landscape. The next CEC meeting promises to provide further insights into the unfolding political narrative.
